2021 Papper Event - Department of Anestheisology

March 20, 2021
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
America/New_York
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, 622 W. 168 St., New York, NY 10032

Dr. Emanuel M. Papper, pioneer of our field, created the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia in 1952. Papper believed the time had come for anesthesiology to take its place not only as an important area of clinical competency, but as a specialty with a strong mission and research drive. On January 1, 1952, he was appointed chair of the independent Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University, only the fourth such medical school department in the world.

As department chair from 1952 to 1969, Dr. Papper raised the visibility of our field as a specialty of academic, research, and clinical consequence. In our department, he has left an indelible mark in the programs that he created and that help to pilot our work to this day. We hold two lecture events each year in honor of his legacy.

During the COVID pandemic, the Papper Lectures were not held in 2020. We have chosen to hold a more expansive event this year, the Papper Event 2021, to honor Dr. Papper. The theme of the event will be COVID-19, with topics ranging from the New York pandemic experience, vaccines, the pandemic and academic anesthesiology to an update of COVID-19 related clinical research from the department.
