Traditionally, scholars and practitioners of national security and humanitarian policy have operated in separate spheres – learning different theories, developing their own vocabularies, and employing distinct toolkits. Some experts have gone so far as to argue that there is an inherent tension, or tradeoff, between the “hard pragmatism” exercised by national security professionals and the priorities of their humanitarian counterparts. However, as the United States faces an increasingly complex international environment – characterized by transborder issues such as mass forced migration and climate change, with the prospect of great power conflict on the horizon – the need to integrate these fields of practice to build a safer world has never been clearer.
Join us for a lively discussion with prominent alumni in the field as we dialogue about the ways in which national security and humanitarian frameworks can either come into conflict with each other, or be brought together to craft a more holistic, humane security policy – not only in theory, but in practice.
