In honor of the tenth anniversary of the Norman E. Alexander Lecture in Jewish Studies, this year's event will highlight the work of scholars doing research in the collections. Prof. Dr. J. H. (Yossi) Chajes will provide a guided tour through the rotulus (vertical scroll) Columbia General Manuscript 247, a fascinating late-nineteenth century ilan (kabbalistic "tree" designed for performative contemplation and study) produced in the eastern Maghreb (Tunisia, Libya) or the Holy Land. Dr. Francesco Spagnolo will discuss the art and music of the Jewish community in Corfu, and its transition from an oral to a written culture. Alexis Hagadorn will describe what she discovered in analyzing binding evidence in the Columbia University Libraries’ Bomberg Talmud.
