NECR Career Deep Dives are a monthly series program alumni share insights and experiences from their careers in conflict resolution with prospective and current students. Alumni discuss their career trajectories, professional trends they have observed, and offer career insights they have gained. There is ample time for Q+A at the end.
Kalyca Thomas moved to New York City for one purpose: to teach adolescents. Having received a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from Florida State University, her teaching career began in The Bronx. Since her first instructional position, she has been an English and Math Special Education teacher, Peer Instructional Coach, and a Social Emotional Learning Coach. Ms. Thomas is an avid advocate for best practices in schools and juvenile justice programs. She is a blogger for New York SchoolTalk and consistently invites others to invest in educational dialogue for the creation of transformative change. She is a trained circle keeper and has led professional development for her colleagues around community circles’ purpose and benefits for their practice. Ms. Thomas is also a New York State mediator. She is the Board Chair for the Institute for Mediation and Conflict Resolution (IMCR). She utilizes individuals’ stories to transform communities through conversation. Ms. Thomas holds a Master of Science in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from Columbia University and is currently pursuing a Juris Master from Florida State University.
