Join Columbia University’s SIPA Urban and Social Policy Concentration and Management Specialization for a panel discussion about the economic impacts of COVID-19 in New York City. Our panel of SIPA professors will provide their perspectives on how a crisis can impact the city’s economy and budget policy; and the importance of funding for workforce development, and education in the city and state’s ongoing recovery efforts.

Dr. Francesco Brindisi:
Francesco Brindisi is the Deputy Director for Revenues, Economics, and Policy at the NYC Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In this role, Dr. Brindisi oversees economic and tax forecasting, state and local tax policy, and economic analysis in a wide array of public policy areas. Previously, Dr. Brindisi was the Director of Policy Research at NYC OMB and Chief Economist at the NYC Economic Development Corporation. Dr. Brindisi is an Adjunct Associate Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and has taught classes in urban economics, public economics and finance, local public finance, the economics of NYC, political economy, and macroeconomics. Dr. Brindisi holds a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University and a laurea summa cum laude from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata."
Stanley Litow:
Stanley Litow is a professor at Duke and Columbia Universities, and serves as innovator-in-residence at Duke. He is a trustee and chair of the Academic Affairs Committee at the State University of New York. He previously served as deputy chancellor of schools for New York and as president of the IBM Foundation. Stanley Litow was recently appointed to the NYC Mayor’s Education Sector Advisory Council. As an adjunct professor at Columbia University, Litow teaches a course on how government, civil society, and corporations can solve societal problems.
State Senator John C. Liu:
John C. Liu is a New York State Senator representing a broad area of northeast Queens. He is chairperson of the Senate’s committee on New York City Education. He is the former Comptroller of the City of New York (2010-2013) and a former member of the New York City Council (2002-2009). In 2013, John was a candidate for Mayor of New York City. State Senator Liu teaches municipal finance and public policy at SIPA and City University of New York (CUNY).

Sarah Holloway has worked in the public and nonprofit sector for 25 years. She is currently a full-time member of the SIPA faculty where she teaches Nonprofit Financial Management and Social Entrepreneurship. In addition to teaching, she runs the school’s Management Specialization—a set of courses and activities that support knowledge and skill building in non-profit, for-profit and social enterprise management and oversees a campus-wide entrepreneurship initiative focused on global Education Technology for the Center for Development Economics & Policy. Sarah is a serial social entrepreneur and the co-founder of six ventures in K-12 education.
