The speed of a fleet is decided by the slowest ship; the direction of a fleet is decided by the leading ship. While education is essential in any society, education at leading institutions is critical for fostering generations of leaders beyond making a living. The rapid changing places such as China are particularly yearning for leaders who have a deep understanding of humanities, cultures and science, who have far-sighted vision, who are equipped with rational, critical and creative thinking capability, and who possess characters of perseverance and determination. The presence or absence of such leaders affects the future of China and the world.
In this talk, the situation of leading educational institutions in China will be objectively discussed. The philosophical as well as mechanistic aspects of education reform will be analyzed.
