This film screening of the first episode of the documentary Nankai – The Tale of A School will be the first of a series commemorating the legacy of world-renowned educator, philosopher, and social activist John Dewey and Teachers College in China. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of John Dewey’s visit to China, where he worked closely with TC students and other prominent Chinese education leaders to promote the “New Culture Movement,” and spread the ideas of democracy and sciences in the newly founded Republic of China. The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the filmmaker, Guang Zu; TC Professor Henry Levin, who is featured in the film; Dr. Portia Williams, Executive Director of the Office of International Affairs; Dr. Henan Cheng, Associate Director of the Center on Chinese Education; and other TC community members who will also share their perspectives on the historical and current implications of educational exchanges between Teachers College and China. This event is open to the public, and is sponsored by TC’s Center on Chinese Education, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, and Gottesman Library.
