This event launches the Tow Center's latest report, Conservative Newswork by Anthony Nadler, A.J. Bauer, and Magda Konieczna
Online conservative news outlets play a crucial role in narrating U.S. political life for tens of millions of readers, listeners, and viewers. Despite this massive footprint, journalism researchers have been slow to investigate how conservative newsworkers think about their mission, their craft, and the ethical dilemmas and debates within the conservative news field.
Based on interviews with journalists and editors from more than a dozen digital conservative news organizations, this new report illuminates the values that guide conservative journalists' news judgments, how they negotiate their professional and advocacy roles, how they seek to engage audiences, and how they think conservative news outlets should operate. After a brief summary of their findings, the report's authors will host a discussion, featuring journalists working at online conservative news outlets in conversation with historian Nicole Hemmer, author of Messengers of the Right: Conservative Media and the Transformation of American Politics (U Penn Press, 2016).
