Initiated in 2008, Grand Rounds is a community conversation on the science, education, and practice of public health. The series provides an intellectual space within which to explore national and global public health challenges and the innovative approaches needed to transform the public's health in the 21st century.
Each year, we select a theme for Grand Rounds to view from multiple dimensions and disciplines. In commemoration of the grim 400th anniversary of the first Africans sold into bondage in North America, the 2019-2020 Grand Rounds series will examine how inequality has been sewn into the fabric of American society with particular impact on health across populations. We invite you to explore these themes with us over the next year.
The Granville H. Sewell Distinguished Lecture is named after the late Columbia Professor, Dr. Granville H. Sewell, who directed our graduate teaching program for many years. This lectureship is supported by gifts from the faculty and alumni of the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University. Every year we honor an individual who has made outstanding contributions to environmental health and has worldwide-recognized leadership in advancing public health.
The Granville H. Sewell lectureship was launched in 1993, when Dr. Tara O'Toole, prior to her arrival at the Dept. of Energy, discussed the radioactive legacy of the cold war. Over the years, honorees have included a very rich cadres of individuals who have had a long lasting impact on science, policymaking and public health, including Nobel laureate Mario Molina, physician-astronaut Story Musgrave, NOAA climate expert James Hansen, and many others.
