Nikolai Petrov is a professor of political science at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow, and heads the Center for Political-Geographic Research. He earned his PhD in geography from Moscow State University. For many years he was scholar-in-residence at the Carnegie Moscow Center, where he directed the Society and Regions project. He has served as Academic Director of the Institute for Regional Politics, Moscow; as a Visiting Associate Professor at Macalester College, Minnesota; and from 1990–1995, as an advisor to the Russian parliament, government, and presidential administration. He is a member of the Program on New Approaches to Research and Security in Eurasia (PONARS Eurasia), of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, and of several journal scientific boards. He is the author or editor of numerous books and articles, including Russia 2025: Scenarios for the Russian Future. His current research and book projects focus on economic and social-political monitoring of Russian regions for the Committee on Civic Initiatives (with Alexander Kynev and Alexei Titkov); on decision making in Putin’s Russia (with Daniel Treisman and others); on Russia’s regime configuration (with Henry Hale and Maria Lipman); and on Russian politics (with Kirill Rogov).
