Based on David Sanger’s best-selling book by New York Times, “The Perfect Weapon” is an HBO documentary that explores the rise of cyber conflict as a primary way in which nations now compete with and sabotage one another. The film explores the role of cheap, invisible, and effective cyber capabilities as the present and future of geopolitical conflict. Rooted in interviews with the participants themselves and cyber experts, the film details key elements in the history of cyber conflicts, such as the Stuxnet attack on Iran’s nuclear enrichment program and Russian election interference in 2016, with an examination of the darker future which may be to come.
This panel includes David Sanger and the director, John Maggio, in conversation with Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs’ dean, Merit Janow, and Professor Jason Healey. Jason is featured in the film based on his 20 years’ experience in cyber as a practitioner, policymaker, and academic. The panel will especially cover discussions of cyber protection and resilience for the 2020 elections.
