The Many Lives of Truyen Kieu (The Tale of Kieu): Open lecture Cam Nguyen, Lecturer, University of California, Berkeley Moderated by John Phan, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University Thursday, November 9 2:30 PM -4:00 PM Kent 424 Nguyen Du’s "The Tale of Kieu" has long been considered the most widely regarded and significant work of Vietnamese literature. Written by Nguyen Du (1766-1820), based loosely on a seventeenth century Chinese novel, the tale conveys the social and political upheavals of Vietnam in the late 1700s when the country was at war. Professor Nguyen will deliver a guest lecture, open to the public, as part of Professor Phan’s new course, Asian Humanities UN1400 section 004, COLLOQUIUM ON MAJOR TEXTS.
