Nephrotic syndrome (NS) caused by minimal change disease (MCD) or focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is usually treated with immunosuppressive treatment without knowledge of the individual genetic makeup. Genetic forms of NS are usually resistant to such treatment and do not recur after kidney transplantation. Hence, genetic testing at the time of diagnosis can spare ineffective and toxic treatment, identify forms amenable to etiologic treatment, and help pre-transplant evaluation.
