The role of a nuclear envelope protein in hepatocellular carcinoma development
The nuclear envelope is a crucial contributor to genome organization and remodeling, which influences development and tumorigenesis. We have found that depletion of a nuclear envelope protein called lamina-associated polypeptide 1 (LAP1) from hepatocytes leads to hepatic steatosis and subsequent hepatocellular carcinoma development in mice fed a normal diet. Our recent data have suggested that LAP1 regulates a genetic locus linked to developmental defects and carcinogenesis. We have also found that LAP1 undergoes an isoform switch during cell differentiation and reversal of the isoform switch occurs in mouse hepatocellular carcinoma models. We aim to uncover fundamental mechanisms about how a nuclear envelope protein controls cell differentiation, development and cancer.

Determinants of Palliative Care Effectiveness for Patients with Metastatic Cancer
Early integration of specialist palliative care for patients with advanced cancer has been recommended by the American Society of Clinical Oncology. However, as hospitals race to implement palliative care programs to meet these guidelines, there is little evidence to guide them as to which ingredients are necessary for effective care delivery. This talk will present the aims and design of our ongoing research to examine whether heterogeneity between specialist palliative care programs impacts their ability to improve outcomes for patients with metastatic cancer.
