Please join us for a lecture by Lena Marasinova, leading researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences and professor at the Higher School of Economics. Lena Marasinova will speak about the history of the death penalty in 18th-century Russia. In particular, the talk will focus on Elizabeth I’s tacit moratorium on the death penalty and the cases when it was violated during the reign of Catherine II. Marasinova will analyze how this legislation reflected the country’s mechanisms of social control, self-representation of the state, and the relationship between secular and religious laws.
