Kathryn (Kate) Moody is a fellow at the IC2 Institute of the University of Texas in Austin. She is a lifelong educator and author who currently serves on the Alumni Advisory Council of Teachers College Columbia University where she earned a doctoral degree in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in Education. Dr. Moody has a private practice as a psychoeducational therapist. She has worked for public school systems, Sesame Street, Nickelodeon and PBS. She was editor of Television Awareness Training (Media Action Research Center 1979) and the author of Growing Up on Television (Times Books, 1980). In 1994-2001 she developed and headed the OPEN GATES Advanced Teaching and Telecommunications Center at the University of Texas Medical School and served on the faculty in the Department of Neurology. She recently published the book The People’s Professors of Cuba: How the Nation Achieved Education for All which describes how Cuba managed, in spite of scarce resources, to successfully educate its population after the revolution in 1959. It details how the nation’s vision of education was developed, how the national school system doubled in size and thousands of teachers were educated, and how Cuba is now entering the realm of digital media and the internet. This book considers Cuba’s schools as well as its integrated systems, such healthcare, and community mental health, and makes a case for the principles that education is a human right and that teaching is the responsibility of everyone.
Andrea Gabor is the author of After the Education Wars: How Smart Schools Upend the Business of Reform and the Bloomberg Chair of Business Journalism at Baruch College at the City University of New York. Prior to joining the faculty at Baruch, Professor Gabor was an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, teaching Critical Issues in International Economics. She is a former editor at both Business Week and U.S. News & World Report. She has also written for, among others, The New York Times, Newsweek, Fortune, and The Smithsonian. Her previous books include The Man Who Discovered Quality: How W. Edwards Deming Brought the Quality Revolution to America and The Capitalist Philosophers. Professor Gabor received a BA with honors from Wesleyan University in German and Government and an MS in Journalism from Columbia University.
